FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sault Ste. Marie (April 26, 2016): On Thursday April 28, the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC), in partnership with the Sault Ste. Marie Science Festival, is hosting the 9th Annual ARTIE (Advanced Research Technology & Innovation Expo) event.

This year’s event is the largest ARTIE ever with over 1600 students from grades 1 to 8 registered! The expo will be held over the course of one day, with groups of elementary school students from Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma district attending either the morning or afternoon sessions. The event will take place at The Tech (formerly St. Mary’s College).

Students will get a chance to discover science and technology in many different forms and hear about the vast careers in these sectors. All of the presentations at ARTIE are put on by local experts from a variety of organizations across Sault Ste. Marie.

“ARTIE provides a fun and exciting opportunity for elementary school students to learn, explore and understand science and technology,” said Tom Vair, executive director, SSMIC. “We hope to spark their interest in these fields, and engage with the youth in our community to foster the next generation of science and technology leaders. We look forward to another great event this year!”

ARTIE is one of the largest science and technology innovation expos for children of its kind in Canada. Since its inception in 2008, more than 5000 students have participated in ARTIE.  This year’s exhibitors will provide hands-on experience in areas including computer game technology, fire sciences, energy safety, solar energy, insects, local agriculture and robotics.

As an organization that is working to drive growth in these areas, the SSMIC sees the need for science and technology skills in the workforce and wants to encourage youth to explore these exciting fields that have great career and entrepreneurship opportunities. In support of Sault Ste. Marie’s youth, the SSMIC launched YouLaunch in 2015, a youth entrepreneur program specifically designed to enable aspiring young entrepreneurs to start or grow successful businesses.

There is no cost to register for ARTIE, however attendance is by invitation only and schools must have registered in advance to be able to participate.
