Alumna Victoria Foglia wins OGS Funding
Former Algoma U Student Wins $15,000 to Fund Graduate Studies
(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – August 20, 2015): Algoma University is pleased to announce that recent graduate Victoria Foglia has been awarded a prestigious Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS), valued at $15,000.
“Victoria has a very promising future in the field of psychology,” said Academic Dean, Dr. Richard McCutcheon. “Victoria is one of three students this year in psychology to be awarded substantial external funding from a governing institution. These awards are a powerful endorsement of the quality of our psychology program. We are pleased to see Victoria’s hard work recognized, and we wish her the very best in her future endeavors at Laurentian University.”
The OGS program encourages excellence in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels. It is a merit-based scholarship. Awards are available to students in all disciplines of academic study. The OGS program is jointly funded by the Province of Ontario and the university awarding the scholarship. Ontario contributes two-thirds of the value of the award and the university provides one-third.
Foglia is a native of Sault Ste. Marie, and graduated from St. Basil Secondary School. This past June, she graduated from Algoma University with a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Psychology, cum laude. In September, she will be attending Laurentian University for her two-year Master of Arts in Experimental Psychology.
In April, Foglia completed her fourth-year honours Psychology thesis, titled “Detecting Deceit in Face to Face and Computer Mediated Conversations”. She examined which mode of communication humans are best able to detect when being lied to, whether through facial expressions in face-to-face conversations, or in patterns and cues in the way people write online. While at Laurentian University, Foglia will be continuing with her undergraduate thesis, and will also examine how well people are able to recognize when someone expresses, suppresses, or fakes pain.
“This scholarship will help me greatly over my first year at Laurentian. It will help pay for my tuition and books as well as my living accommodations, such as rent. The scholarship will allow me to put all of my focus into my studies and research,” said Victoria Foglia.
Foglia is one of three Algoma U Psychology graduates from the Class of 2015 to receive hefty government funding for graduate school.
