SAULT STE. MARIE (May 2, 2016) – Residents Encouraged To Take Part in SAULT FREECYCLE 2016

The spring weather is finally here! Have you started your spring cleaning? Sault residents won’t want to miss the fifth annual Sault Freecycle on Saturday, May 28, 2016 to help clear out their unwanted items.

This free-for-all helps the environment by reducing the number of unwanted items that end up in landfills. It’s also an opportunity for residents to get out in their community, meet their neighbours and find some cool new additions for their home.

Sault Freecycle is a voluntary event. The following are a few simple steps for residents to follow if they choose to participate:

  • Place reusable household items at the curb in front of your home on May 28, 2016.
  • Place only the items you wish to give away at the curb and make sure to include “FREE” stickers or signs on the items.
  • Avoid taking items from the curb that aren’t labeled “FREE.”
  • Residents who live in apartment or condominium buildings can take part but should make sure to get permission from their landlord first and ask where to place items.
  • Remove leftover items from the curb by 9:00 p.m. on May 28, 2016. The City of Sault Ste. Marie is not offering curbside collection for items not taken.
  • Consider donating any unclaimed items to a charitable organization. You can find a list of reputable local groups online at facebook.com/saultfreecycle

Examples of items for freecycling include:

  • Books, CDs and DVDs
  • Furniture, electronics and small appliances
  • Sports equipment and toys
  • Yard and gardening tools and equipment (e.g., lawn mowers, snow blowers, rakes, shovels)
  • Kitchen gadgets, dishes, cutlery, pots and pans
  • Construction materials (e.g., nails, paint, wood)
  • Clothing

Please do not put out:

  • Items that could be unsafe or illegal items
  • Items that could harbour bed bugs (e.g., mattresses)
  • For information on items that aren’t safe to give away (e.g., baby walkers, lawn darts) visit the Consumer Product Safety Bureau.

Residents are encouraged to share their photos and stories from the Sault Freecycle via social media. Use the hashtag #saultfreecycle. Residents can also post on Facebook at www.facebook.com/saultfreecycle

Sault Freecycle happens rain or shine. Residents should use their own discretion when deciding whether to put items at the curb.
