The Northern Hoot Struggling to Keep the Lights On: Part II

0

Dear Readers:

July 28, 2017 represents the Northern Hoot’s third anniversary providing in-depth and original content relevant to people in the North. Barring eleventh hour miracles, I will be discontinuing service at that time. I have been grateful for a devoted and growing readership but disheartened that a recurring and sustainable monthly revenue remains elusive for the Northern Hoot.

A recent article by the Canadian Journalism Project noted that small-scale community news outlets can have a meaningful impact and thrive on a shoestring, but support and funding for these independent entities have become scarce.

Operating at an embarrassing loss every month, I have entertained myself with fantasies of what the Northern Hoot could achieve with just a modest revenue. My intention today isn’t to write an elaborate piece that outlines how the Northern Hoot is unique, or about the challenges it faces in an online world cluttered with ‘infotainment’ and news catered to advertisers –that piece was written last year when things were already grim.

Simply, 1,000 readers committing to a recurring donation of $5 per month, or 100 readers committing to a recurring donation of $50 per month, or 5 advertisers committed to monthly advertising/sponsorship could save the Northern Hoot.

My heartfelt thanks to readers and advertisers that have been loyal supporters of the Northern Hoot since its launch three years ago. My gratitude and love to a small handful of family and friends that have supported my ambition to provide an alternative, research-based news publication for all of us in Northern Ontario. And many thanks to the writers who have contributed their work pro bono, all for the love of transparency, conversation and truth.

Sincerely,

Steffanie Petroni, Founding Editor-in-Chief
